WP1 | Seismic experiment in Svalbard

WP1 consists in the deployment of a dense array of one- and three-components geophones on the ice cover that builds up during winter on the Lake. Attempts to install geophones on the frozen lakes of the Alps were not successful. This was due to to unreliable weather conditions (not cold enough) for a deployment of our sensors for several days. Hence the Icewaveguide experiement took place (...)

WP2 | Noise correlation function

The figure below shows the spectrogram of one full day of recording on 5 March 2019, from station 125-525 at the centre of the main array. The spectrogram contains thousands of impulsive and broadband events triggered by ice cracking, most likely due to the mechanical stress induced by tidal effects. There is also a more consistent trend at lower frequencies between 1 and 25 Hz, where signal (...)

WP3 | forward modeling and data inversion

Forward modelling Basic model. The most basic approximation of the ice cover on the lake is a leaky plate model of constant thickness (Stein et al, 1998), as shown in the figure below. Experience shows that, although gross at first sight, this model explains data in a surprisingly accurate fashion despite complex additional physics. It also has the advantage of having ready-to-use analytical (...)
